The Gingrich Foundation is pleased to announce that the National Constitution Center is the July Charity of the Month for its commitment to educating Americans about our nation’s Constitution.
It was 225 years ago this summer, in 1787, that our Founding Fathers gathered in Philadelphia and designed a new constitution for the young United States. Today, their genius lives on as the world’s oldest surviving governing document.
In 1988, following the 200th anniversary of the Constitution’s signing, Congress passed the Constitution Heritage Act, establishing the National Constitution Center on Independence Mall in Philadelphia just a few blocks from where the document was debated and composed two centuries earlier. Construction on the new museum began in 2000, and it was opened three years later, on July 4, 2003.
Today, the National Constitution Center is the only museum devoted entirely to the U.S. Constitution. Its signature exhibit, “The Story of We the People,” begins with an extraordinary multimedia theater performance and continues with a walk through American history from our founding up until today. The exhibit teaches the unique role our Constitution has always played in our politics and civic life, and highlights the Constitutional principles such as free speech, religious liberty, and representative government that have helped make America an exceptional nation.
In the Center’s Signers’ Hall, visitors come face-to-face with bronze statues of every delegate to the Constitutional Convention, life-size and realistic — many striking in their small size but some, such as Washington, towering over even most modern onlookers.
More than six million people have visited the Constitution Center since it opened in 2003.
The story of our nation’s Constitution is one of the great stories of freedom in the history of the world. Sharing its lessons with Americans as well as with visitors from around the globe is an important mission.
The National Constitution Center is an extraordinary effort to educate us about this document that has guided our self-government for more than two centuries.
Please join us in supporting the National Constitution Center today.
