Charity of the Month: Our House
February 1, 2017
Newt and Callista Gingrich
The Gingrich Foundation is pleased to designate Our House in Atlanta, Georgia as its February Charity of the Month.
Our House began helping homeless families in March of 1988. The founders noticed that without safe, reliable childcare services, some families found it nearly impossible to look for and find work. To help these families, Our House started offering free childcare services – but this was only the beginning.
In 2014, Our House merged with Genesis Shelter, which opened its doors in 1994 as a shelter for homeless mothers and newborns in the Atlanta area. Through the merger, Our House gained a 76-bed emergency shelter with the ability to house up to 18 infants and their families a day.
Our House also offers early childhood education and job training programs for parents to help families break out of the cycle of poverty and homelessness. In 2015, the charity added two preschool classrooms and one infant classroom, which meant its early childhood education program could serve up to 151 children. Its job training program includes a Child Development Associate Certification program, which trains people to work in childcare, along with workshops on resume writing, budgeting and other essential job and life skills.
According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 549,928 Americans experienced homelessness in 2016, and one fifth of those people were children. Our House is doing its part to help give families in Atlanta a safe place to stay and a way out of poverty.
Our daughter, Jackie Cushman, serves as an Advisory Council Member to Our House. We are proud of her efforts and hope you will join us in supporting this worthy cause.
