Callista Bisek Gingrich, wife of a famed politician, talks with the "Polish Daily News" about her Slavic roots

You don't have to be a political expert to have heard the name Newt Gingrich. The former speaker of the House of Representatives (1995-1999), "Time" magazine's Man of the Year, known for his staunch conservative views and strong debates with the Democrats, has returned to the front pages. He is vying for a GOP nomination in next year's presidential elections. His secret weapon in winning could just turn out to be his younger, attractive wife of Polish descent. Callista Bisek Gingrich has been known to be influential on her husband. After all, she had something to do with his conversion to Catholicism. And there is a good chance he'd seek her advice in his presidential campaigning as well.
In an exclusive interview with the "Polish Daily News," Callista chats with us about her Polish roots.

More than five thousand five hundred of you responded last week to my letter on the Super Committee disaster. Of those responding, 96 percent said they expected that the Super Committee would fail to make real spending cuts but would raise taxes. Almost 93 percent said its proceedings should be open to the public.

The idea of twelve people controlling massive debt reduction is so foolish that everywhere I go, Americans are cheering each time I condemn the concept. They understand instinctively that the Super Committee is designed to shut Americans and their elected representatives out of the process while concentrating power in the hands of a few.

Nothing illustrates the gap between Washington and America better than the difference in reaction to the "Super Committee" that the debt ceiling deal set up to cut spending.

In Washington, a 12-member group with tremendous power to dictate the details of debt reduction is seen as a great idea.

Outside Washington, people applaud every time I condemn the process.

The rest of America sees a plan to skip 523 members of Congress while focusing power on a select 12 as a dangerous centralization of authority.

Speaker Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista visited the Nixon Library Wednesday to screen A City Upon a Hill: The Spirit of American Exceptionalism, their new film about the strength of character upon which America was built, and how the nation needs to recover from its crisis in confidence to meet future challenges.

Afterward, Speaker Gingrich took questions from the audience and signed copies of his newest book, A Nation Like No Other: Why American Exceptionalism Matters.

Asked about his candidacy and how the next Commander-in-Chief can better affect positive change in the country, Gingrich said that one person couldn’t face America’s challenges alone.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told me that his campaign for president, now stalled in seventh place, will be springing to life in the next two months.

"I actually think this is a little bit like watching Walmart grow," he said before taking the stage with his wife, Callista, at Yorba Linda's Nixon Library on Wednesday. "You watch the way we're developing new approaches and new ideas and the way we're using the internet – I think over the next 60 days you will see a campaign that is fundamentally different from anything you've seen. It will be very appealing to people who know that we're in a period where we need very dramatic change.

"If there's any distinction, it's between three candidates who have big money – (Mitt) Romney, (Michele) Bachmann and (Rick) Perry – and a candidate who has big ideas."

Washington is so stuck in partisanship and ideological warfare that our representatives are missing easy opportunities for bipartisan solutions that would actually make things better for all Americans.

A thousand small solutions may actually be preferable to a magic committee of twelve trying to create a gigantic (and almost certainly bad) deal.

House Republicans could take a creative step toward a bipartisan, thousand-solution strategy by passing a bill supported by Senate Democrats the first week they return to Washington.
